Prior to the marriage James had been a soldier with the British Army.
He had been wounded and had part of his jaw shot away, which presumably led to his discharge.
According to Gabriel SEARY, James named his first son
Victor Buller Bergendal after the general he had
served under.
'Buller' would be
General Rt Hon Sir Redvers Buller VC GCB (1840-1908) who was commissioned into the 60th Rifles (King’s Royal
Rifle Corps) in May 1858. He served in the Peking expedition of 1860, in the Red River Rebellion (Canada) of 1870,
in Ashanti (Ghana) 1873-4, in the Kaffir War (South Africa) of 1878, the Zulu War (South Africa) of 1879,
as Chief of Staff in the first Anglo-Boer War 1880-1881, in the Egyptian campaign of 1882, the Gordon relief expedition of 1885,
and the second Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902.
'Bergendal' refers to the
Battle of Bergendal which took place on 21 to 27 August 1900,
the British forces being under the command of General Buller.
It can be assumed that James took part in this battle.
