In the 1881 census Richard was recorded as a Railway Labourer at 6A Grange Street, Camberley. His children were born at Paddington (1855), Kent (1863), and Surrey (1868, 1873, and 1875). It seems probable that he was a railway employee during that time.

His daughter Sarah CLACK lived with her aunt and uncle Mary Ann Clack (1827) and John Edward HAWKINS (1821) at Little Coxwell.
