Appleton, Abingdon
JAMES SEARY & MARTHA ˍ
All birth dates, except James', have been estimated from the 1881 census record for Abingdon.
The family were recorded living at 102 Broad Road, Appleton. James is recorded as an agricultural labourer,
aged 48. Martha age is given as 41, and their daughter Ann Maria is recorded as a general servant aged 15.
It is assumed that this James is the same person as James the son of William SEARY and Elizabeth TOWNSEND
whose age was given as 11 in the 1841 census. This infers that William and Elizabeth's son was born in 1830 or 1829.
Although in the 1881 census for Abingdon this James' age is given as 48, which would mean he was born in 1832 or 1833,
it is possible he may have knocked off a couple of years from his age not wanting to admit to being fifty.
Knocking a few years of one's age seems to have been fairly common in this period. It is possible that employers preferred
to take on men under fifty.
