Faringdon
GEORGE PETTIFER & SARAH SEARY
HUSBAND
George PETTIFER 1818-
father: James PETTIFER
mother:
born: 1818
baptized:
died:
buried:
George's age is given as 21 at the time of his marriage in April 1840. Depending on the month of his birth, this could
tally with his age recorded in the 1841 census where he is stated to be 23. He was therefore probably born in 1818.
WIFE
Sarah SEARY 1816-
father: William SEARY
mother: Hester ANDREWS
born: 1816
baptized:
died:
buried:
Sarah's age is given as 21 at the time of her marriage in 1840. However this does not tally with
her age recorded in the 1841 census where she is stated to be 25, two years older than her husband.
The latter is more likely and therfore she was probably born in 1816.
Sarah was probably one of the witnesses to the marriage of John CLACK and Sophia WALKER on 3 March 1835.
The Walkers were possibly family friends because Sarah and a Thomas WALKER were witnesses to the marriage
of her brother Frederick SEARY and Clara BOND in 1836.

CHILDREN BEFORE MARRIAGE
William Knapp SEARY 1839-
born: 1839
baptized: 2 October 1839 at Faringdon.
The baptism was performed by the Rev William HAWKINS and Sarah's occupation is given as dressmaker.
The birth was 6 months before Sarah's marriage to George PETTIFER. The forename "Knapp" no doubt identifies the father.
The 1841 Census for Faringdon records a Knapp family living in London Street. Richard KNAPP aged ?50,
wife Hannah aged 50, son Thomas aged 20, daughter Ann [microfilm unreadable], son James aged 15, son John aged ?15,
daughter Mary aged 9, and a Sophia KNAPP [unreadable].
It is probable that the son James KNAPP was the witness to Sarah's marriage.
However he is unlikely to have been William's father as he would
only have been at most 17 at the time whereas Sarah was probably about 23.
Nor is James' brother Thomas KNAPP likely to have been the father as he would have been only about 19.
The PETTIFER family were recorded at 1841 Census for Faringdon living at Worlds End.
George PETTIFER aged 23, ?bricklayer; Sarah PETTIFER aged 25; and William K. SEARY aged 1.
