In the 1841 Little Coxwell census the household included Charles HATT aged 43, Harriet HATT aged 34, Ann HATT aged 7, Richard NEALE aged 13, and Sarah NEALE aged 81. All were ag. labs, the HATTS being Born in County, while the NEALEs were not. It is highly probable that they were related and Harriet was born Harriet NEALE.

HARRIET AS A WIDOW

1851

In the 1851 Little Coxwell census, Harriet Hatt, now a widow, was recorded together with two young male servants. It is unlikely that an agricultural labourer such as Hannah would have servants, and it is probable that Harriet took in boarders but avoided being explicit.

  Harriet HAT [sic], 42, h, F, w, ag.lab., b. Little Coxwell
Thomas ACOTT, 25, serv, M, u, Groom, b. Little Coxwell
  Charles TAYLOR, 21, serv, M, u, Shepherd, b. Ashbury

1861

In the 1861 Little Coxwell census she is recorded with a "visitor". Once again this is probably a boarder.

  Harriet HATT, 54, h, F, w, housekeeper, b. Little Coxwell
Elizabeth HAWKINS, 16, visitor, F, u, servant, b. Little Coxwell

Elizabeth HAWKINS will be the daughter of Vincent HAWKINS 1818.

1871

In the 1871 Little Coxwell census Harriet has no longer hidden the fact that she has boarders. The double slash (which probably should have been a single slash) indicates the start of another household residing in the same building. Presumably boarders were provided with meals, and lodgers were not.

Harriet HATT, ?63 or ?65, h, laundress, b. Little Coxwell
Ann DAVIS, 36, boarder, laundress, b. Little Coxwell
Harriet DAVIS, 8, d, scholar, b. Little Coxwell
Sarah DAVIS, 6, d, scholar, b. Little Coxwell
  //
James HAWKINS, ?48, lodger, labourer, b. Little Coxwell

It is possible that Ann DAVIS was Harriet's daughter Mary Anne HATT, and that the children were Harriet's grandchildren.

James HAWKINS will be the son of John HAWKINS 1799 and Mary NICHOLS. He died in 1908 in Faringdon Workhouse.

1881

Harriet appears in the 1881 Little Coxwell census with another lodger.

  Harriett HATT, 75, h, F, w, pauper, b. Little Coxwell
Mary PATEY, 80, lodger, F, u, pauper, b. Little Coxwell
