In 1715 a Mary BRIN was examined by the magistrates at Newbury, Berkshire.

"Examined at Newberry 16 Sep 1715, Mary Brin, singlewoman of Newberry, then with child, stated that Robert Hawkins of Shellingford, wool comber, had several times had carnal knowledge of her body, first in Eastfield, Newberry, about a fortnight before the last great eclipse, then about a forttnight after the eclipse in Mr Merriman's meadow in Newberry, and several times since, most recently on Sunday last. Stated Robert Hawkins was the father and no other person had had carnal knowledge of her body."

(It is unlikely it crossed Robert and Mary's minds that their escapade in Mr Merriman's meadow would be read about three hundred years later...)
